Can anyone tell me where to find the standard or rules for pots. I see various sizes such as 3256 and similar numbers used to describe some trimpots and multi turn devices. I have looked all over the net for an explanation of that particular numbering system and the benefits of the different sized devices. apparently this system is designed for identifying the parts more closely, but I am unable to find how or where the sizing info came from or how it is applied. Any help finding the info would be greatly appreciated. TIA!!!

That was a very informative link, but I am still trying to locate the source of the numbering sequences. SMT's use 0603, 0805 and other numbers that denote physical size. Can you direct me to the same standard for pots?
