I got a 12v to 5v USB connection so I can charge my phone. I finally received it in the mail and it won't charge my phone. I have an iPhone 5s. I think the issue is it's a 3 amp connector and iPhones can only handle up to 2.1 amps from what I have been reading. I have looked on eBay and I can't find anything else than 3 amps. Can anyone suggest a way around this? Also if I buy a double USB connection would that half the amps?

 

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but lipos are getting quite cheap. You could do 10Ah worth of 4 cell lipos ( http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15521__Turnigy_5000mAh_4S1P_14_8v_20C_hardcase_pack.html ) For 50$ and save a fair bit of weight over a 12 SLA battery.

 

I already have battery's. But they do look interesting. I can run my set up off one battery of I want to save on weight. But in total it weighs 11kg which I was expecting around 10kg so I'm happy with that.

Could anyone please tell me something about the 3A usb? I know this is a dumb question but I'm just trying to find a way for it to work. It charges other devices but just not my iPhone because it's too many amps. Any suggestions would be appreciated

 

It's not too many amps issue.

Yeah I have a power bank that charges off USB and that works. Also I put a memory stick in and it was powering up so it must be he iPhone right?

 

Is the converter you got working. I think it has a problem.
You need to measure it's output. You would a need a USB cable to plug in and strip the other end to measure voltage.

 

Okay I'll see if I have a USB cable that I don't need. Also if the voltage is wrong wouldn't that mean my other devices wouldn't charge aswell since they are made to run off 5 volts aswell.

 

Any value from 4.8 to 5.1V will work.

I found an old computer mouse. It showed 4.95-5.0 so there's no issues there. I also tried to charge my girlfriends camera and that worked

 

It could be the phone is trying to find the USB data connection or something.
You would need to find out how an original USB phone charger is connected.
You would need to check the connection at the charger circuit.

You need to look at the data terminals which is the center two terminals, not the Ground and +5V terminals

 

iPhone's require connections between the data lines for it to recognize a charger. Google iPhone charger circuit to see how to make the connections. Like Rifaa said. Take a look at the picture below.

 

Sorry about the delay i have been busy with other things. That's looks very complicated for someone with a skill level like mine, I'm looking for an easy fix here. My idea to to try a 12v cigarette lighter usb charger out of a car and if that works ill buy one and pull it apart and use that instead.

Does anyone have any other ideas remembering im on a budget?
