Point on wave device

Hello everyone,

I am trying to find a device that can turn ON an inductive load at a specific angle (0; 45; 90 deg etc) on the voltage wave.

Could anyone please suggest how I should start this project?

Better yet, if anyone could point me to the right direction where I can buy a product like this off the shelf that would be the ideal.

Thanks all,
Peter

Hello JDT,

Thanks for your reply. I will do some research on the phase-controlled triac.

My application is to trigger (latch on) a contactor at a specific angle on the voltage waveform for a set period of time, i.e. 1-cycle (20ms) or 2-cycle (40ms). I am also wondering if such device can be bought off the shelf?

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks again everyone.
Peter

Edit:
Added a waveform of the point on wave that I am describing.

Hello blueroomelectronics,

The device I am going to trigger is a contactor, i.e latching the contactor ON. The contactor is basically switching a high current load (100-500A) at 45° of the voltage waveform for 20 - 40ms.

Please refer to the diagram I have attached in my previous post.

Thanks,
Pete

Have you considered the pull-in time of the contactor? They're not that fast you know. I couldn't find that spec in your data sheet but I wouldn't be surprised that > 5 cycles @ 60Hz would pass before the contacts closed, and this doesn't include contact bounce!
