All About Circuits

Please help with this DLD project, digital lock

Please give me some basic info on how to make a digital lock.
Like in a few steps. Please tell me what is going on in the larger circuit I have attached.
Also I am going to use a keypad for input 0 to 9, now what do I use to convert it to binary.
Please give me some basics.
