which is better, ultrasonic obstacle detector or IR(infrared) obstacle detector...?

Purely based on my uneducated guess in this field, I would say:

- Ultrasound can detect better but with less focus
- Infrared is more likely to be perturbed by the environment but can be focused

I imagine infrared would be cheaper? Ultrasound transducers can be pricey can't they?
