If you pass 20mA of current through the diode (which is an infrared LED) and the slot is not blocked, then the transistor will turn on. If the slot is blocked, the transistor will turn off.

C is the collector, E is the emitter.

Here is one way it could be used:

R1's value is a guess, as I'm not certain of the IR LED's Vf; but it should be safe.
R2 will limit current through the transistor to less than 5mA.

thank you. does the same can be used for 4N35 (optocoupler)
