Parking sensor kit: Modify or Rebuild

Hello, I have bought a parking sensor set made by Hawk (model #RA-02B, contains 2 sensors, one buzzer and the main unit) but I don't like it. The minimum distance it can detect is 20cm which is too long for me.

I want to either convert it to detect distances down to 2cm or build a new circuit which will use the existing sensors.

Plan A (modify the detected distance):
I have identified the two ICs as:
CF745 EPROM/ROM-Based*8-Bit CMOS Microcontroller*Series by Microchip

and TL084 JFET-Input Operational Amplifier

Do you have any idea what component to modify in order to increase the system's sensitivity?

Here are some more detailed pictures of the parking sensor control unit:

Plan B (build a new circuit but use existing sensors):
I found a circuit I could use but it needs an IR LED and an IR photodiode. The existing system uses sensors that only have two wires. How does it work? It should be 4 wires, or 3 (common ground). Is it using TDM?

Anyway, is there any way I could use these sensors for the new circuit?

Thanks for your time!
Chris
