I need to purchase an oscilloscope and maybe a spectrum analyser, however iam not sure what is appropriate i.e bandwidth of scope and also other critical specs? Basically i work in embedded systems mostly and would like to be able to analyse PWM signals, be able to see the effects switching inductive loads have on power and ground signals all pretty much at board level. As regards the spectrum analyser again i would like to analyse the same signals and want to use it to help me understand board level EMC (not to do full EMC conformity). I need to basically take the book theory and see this stuff in reality and verify other circuits such as 12C Comms, RS232 comms, Brushless motor signals!

At the moment i would like to have the oscilloscope with a 500Mhz bandwidth and the spectrum analyser to 1Ghz dont ask why, is this a bit overkill?

What do most of you use and mainly what for?
What are the main crtical specs to watch out for?
I think there might be an interesting article in there somewhere for someone who has experience with a range of scopes and analysers!!!!
