Hi all,

Can someone please suggest me a suitable opto-isolator for SPI communication. It should be cheap and thru-hole. This is to isolate a pic18f and a ade7758 ic. The SPI clock frequency will be about 1MHz.

Even a digital isolator or a completely different method will also be ok as long as it electrically isolates while having a fast response time.

I just went into the parametric search page on the Mouser Electronics site:
http://www.mouser.com/search/Default.aspx

Then go to "Optocouplers / Photocouplers" and then "High Speed Optocouplers". They make it very easy, and once you identify a part, you don't need to buy it there if you can find it cheaper somewhere else.

 

Several chip companies now make digital isolators that literally have internal isolation structures (not sure how they achieve this) for both signal and power.

However, being modern components they only come in SMD packages such as SOIC.

MAX14850 is one, LTM2883 is another.

They also provide isolated power. Very cool!
