A socket is a good idea. You might not be satisfied with the 4565, lots of distortion so I'm told. The LM4562 is light years ahead and it has the same pinout too.Oddly enough, I'm helping my boy with his first project, a 2 channel preamp between his speakers and his computer. I'm going to use some very cheap decent op amps, NJM4565. I'm going to have him use a socket in case it isn't good enough.

No.If you use the actual LM386 IC that's specified it should sound fairly good, almost a watt output.
