need help with terminology

I want to send my voice wirelessly to a receiver a mile away. The receiver does not need to transmit anything back. Kind of like a longer range baby monitor.

I am trying to identify the parts I would need to make this happen. Suggestions?

Family service radios are cheap; have a range over a mile(up to 15) and about 2500 channels to choose from. One radio to act as a reciever and the other for you to use would fulfill all your requests.

They're all over the place, some will even go for several miles but in theory you're supposed to get a license for them.

We use them a lot around the warehouse, have found the Motorola and even off brands to be more reliable than the Cobra brands.

Of course if you like to build and have line of sight you can use an IR laser setup, or put together an antenna setup for a lower powered radio. Something along this line works really well when you build it exactly to the frequency specs:
