Need help using Com84 with PIC16F627?

i recently built the Com84 programmer and am having a lot of problems with it. (i got the schematic from here - i know it says to use Pix but i did not quite get to grips with the interface on it).

so far i have been able to read the PIC16F627 (came out as complete 3FFFh - not sure if this is normal) and have had no success at programming it.

does anyone have a program which can write to this PIC and has simple setting changes? all the programs i have found have had a lot wrong with them e.g. WinPic randomly deleted PIC16F627 from its config file (don't know what happened there).

so...

1. does anyone have the PIC16F627 config settings for WinPic? so i can fill in the missing parts.

or

2. does anyone have an easier program i could use to write to this pic?

or

3. is my pic defective?
