need help, first time timer questions

I'm looking to build (or find) a timer for a solenoid that will operate at approx 24vac. My objective is to have a cycle of 10-15 seconds on (solenoid open) and off for 4 hours (closed). I am a newbie when it comes to circuits, but work at a place with people that can help. Can anyone provide me with information on how to create such a creature? or where to go to find one? Please contact me if you can help, or need more information!

What is the operating voltage and current rating of the solenoid?

Can you use a rectifier to rectify the 24VAC to DC and power a timer IC like the 555?
