In VBulliten (which is the software this site uses) commands are imbedded between brackets. Substituting {} for the brackets [], you can hypertext a word with the comment {url=http:any address}word{/url}. It also word the same for pictures (we have an album here you can use) {img}http:image address{/img}

It also could be, the font, you are, or the site is using does not support certain characters. Though, that is more of a box, than to brackets.

Usually if its in a friends email signature its just trying to display a font or letter your computer doesn't understand. For instance copy a paragraph of text from word to HTML. Then post the HTML and you will find all special charactors are "?"'s. So your text looks like this. I?m about to go? either to the seafood store? or the meat marktet? AND WHERE?S MY MONEY???? Sometimes its a square box instead of a question mark.
