Multi-coil Solenoids... How would they work?

Here is a crude graphic showing an array of three solenoid coils and a plunger. In each variation of the multi-coil solenoid, different coils are active. I'm wondering if the geometric center of the magnetic field (and thus the attraction center for the plunger) can be assumed to work in this way?

If you google a dual coil relay, you see that they are saving power by only using full power (both coils) to actuate the relay, the holding coil uses less power than a single coil relay.

Automobile starter solenoids used to work that way, maybe they still do.
