Hello,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a problem I have been having with understanding motors. I understand the prinicple of the different types of motors but I can never seem to look at a motor and decide which one it is. I have been looking on the Internet for sectioned views of the different motors but havn't had much luck!
Thanks

Wikipedia is another good source for information on the different types. I have the most difficulty telling shunt-wound from series-wound DC motors by sight. The original application and number of accessible wires can give a clue. The Educypedia link (above) describes how to convert a series-wound starter motor to be reversible. Unfortunately, it does not describe the shunt wound motor for comparison. Here is one (of many) sites that describes the difference.
