When finding, $$V_{CMmax}$$, what is the reason for using $$V_{D}$$ as opposed to $$v_{DS}$$?

For the edge of saturation and triode (i.e. where VCMmax occurs),

$$v_{GS} - V_{t} = v_{DS}, \quad \quad v_{GS} = V_{CMmax}$$

$$\Rightarrow V_{CMmax} = Vt + v_{DS}$$

?
