In the application notes that sirch2 gave, the use of a logic mosfet is a must.
If you want to use standard mosfets that need a gate voltage of 10 Volts, a level translator or mosfet driver is needed.

There are 5v gate level Mosfets, for the simple low power switching such as relays etc, there is the 2N7000 FET darlington-equivalent designed for this purpose.

MOSFET is a voltage controlled device, depending on the characteristic, at 5V, the mosfet could be saturated at lower drain current. Datasheet would be helpful.
