Measuring efficiency of a buck regulator?

However the 34063 is not the right chip to get 95% type efficiencies from, if you want something like that there are much better chips.
Can you suggest something?


Low part count line the 3406.
In Dip package or even SOP. I could probably go smaller as I am already dealing with a pt4114 that is a really tiny SMD (can't remember the exact footprint right now), still not sure if I am going to be able to solder that tiny thing. :)

It depends on your current range. 12v->5v conversion is a popular voltage range and there are a lot of chips on the market now with very low parts count.

Google for "SMPS 5v buck regulator IC" and "low parts count 5v SMPS buck regulator IC". You can also add "high efficiency" to your search terms if you like. :)
