Load Condition Detection?

I'm trying to come up with a circuit that detects whether the load of an amplifier is open, shorted, or ok. I've found some chips that do this but they don't seem to be able to take in more than 10 mA and since I'm working with an amplifier, I need more than 10 mA to run through the circuit. Could anyone shed some light on this problem or provide some links to information about load condition detection for higher power systems?
