I use SMD parts almost exclusively. I prefer them to through hole, unless one is using a breadboard. BTW: All of the datasheets caution against using a breadboard for switching power supplies. At the price, you might want to seriously consider the generic PCB from National for that switcher. You can also look at the datasheet for that PCB and use that as a guide for your own PCB.
One trick with SMD is to use a paste flux, such as Kesters 44. That is particularly helpful on a home-made, non-plated board.
