Wow, I never realised that my junk old bulb would clock up so many replies in here.

Top marks to the dude who found a you tube clip of one in use. I guess I better find an old BC socket and make sure it still works.

Thinking back to my undergrad physics lab, I think neon produces a couple of green lines (and even perhaps blue?) that you can filter to just let the green pass. Also, isn't the spectrum of neon smeared pretty widely across the red-orange and even yellow part of the spectrum?

Nice one, I didn't know about the tiny bit of green. Here's a neon spectrum from that Wiki page;

There is a touch of green there. However the "neon light" industry is dominated by phosphor tubes these days, apparently people want more colours than orange.

Neon tubes:
I still have a few Nixie tubes around also a very 'neat' counter tube was the Decatron, works on a similar index method as a stepper motor.

It kinda reminds me of some of my old Reel to Reel recorders, with the "Magic Eye". Probably not the same type though.
I think the Eye was a vacuum tube, or.....
