I'm going to guess that the answer is: unlikely. My reasons have to do with the difficulty of handling character sets whose character length is not a multiple of 8 and the continuously decreasing cost of memory. Memory is now so cheap there is really very little point in optimizing applications to conserve memory. This was not true 40 years ago when I had my first job at a company whose products had 16K of ROM and 1K of RAM. The RAM was actually a huge advantage over delay line memory!
