Can i drive an IR led in remote control application from a GIO pin directly or use a IR encoder IC and then drive the LED. Is the first way feasible.

Its a nxp micro controller and RC6 standard protocol being used.

i would use a fet as the driver for the led, as it will take a higher pulsing current and may damage your micro driving the led directly.
