I am building a piece of furniture and I would like to put an IPOD/IPHONE docking station into the furniture - to play music into external speakers.

I would like it to be so the IPOD/IPHONE is inserted into the docking station and then the volume controls and song next/ back buttons are separate buttons on the furniture.

I would prefer not to use a remote.

Does anyone know if you can buy these buttons or circuitry PCB separately to make this happen. So far the only solution I have come up with is buying a cheap IPOD/ IPHONE docking station and ripping the buttons out of it to then install in the furniture.

Any help/ ideas - very much appreciated.

That'd be my approach! Well actually I would spend some time searching first for the individual parts, but I suppose you've done that.
