Interfacing a thermopile to an AVR

Can someone tell me if the thermopile can directly input to the Arduino ADC port? My thermopile output is typical at about 0.2mv. I assumed I would need a lot of amplification, such as around 10K times, to output around 2V. Am I wrong?

I've been fighting with Op Amp circuits trying to boost the thermopile output but it's been a long, confusing road. It's difficult to get component values right and I can't seem to find a good basic circuit to adapt on the Net.
BTW, my Arduino runs on a 5V USB voltage supply.

Perhaps you can provide us with your thermopile's part number so that one of our members can research the specific device you are using.

Have a look at the AD594 and AD595 devices, these are specifically made for converting thermocouple signals to more realistic voltages.
