hello, I am trying to buy the IC used in this diagram called a 74HC14 my problem is that when I search for the number on digikey, I get 158 results!!! and they all have 74HC14 in their name :s can someone help me figure out which one i need and if there are better quality ones please?

You want a 74HC14. There may be different packages and temperature specifications denoted by various suffixes, but an "inverting Schmitt trigger' is what you want. Also, there are different families of very similar chips, such as 74C14 and 74HCT14, but if you look for the 74HC14, you should find it. Your links were to other divices. Search Fairchild Semiconductor application note, AN-118.
