PLEASE do not use an aluminum rod, even if insulated it can cause a problem.

Can I ask why the aluminium rod would not be good? Electrical issues or a mechanical issue. Just curious.

Ask yourself. What happens if the rod slips and falls into the power supply?

 

Or worse. What happens if it is touching something it shouldn't like the mains and you happen to make contact with the rod?
