When you say PLC, is this the industry definition of the PLC as made by Allen-Bradly, Mitsubishi, Idec etc?
I am not sure what resources you have where you live, but the book by John Ridley - Mitsubishi FX Programmable Logic Controllers gives excellent examples of automation using the PLC.
Even if not using Mitsubishi, it shows examples that can be adapted for other systems.
There is also the SmartRelay for smaller systems and very powerful for its size.
If not then a more specific definition is needed.
