How to use this wire/board connector

The specifications indicate that it's an insulation displacement termination (IDT). You should refer to the manufacturer's data for methods and tools.

This is what I believe to be the tool for
insertion. I recently had to get one myself.

It is not obvious from datasheet of connector
what is needed for insertion of wires. Basically
I did the same thing, bought the connectors then
said WTH (what the heck)?.

Aha. I was hoping I could find a way to do it without buying the tool and that data sheet seems to explain how it's done. So let's hope I figure something out. If not I'll just but it. Thanks.

If you have a cheap flat blade screwdriver to sacrifice and some skill with a rotary tool cutoff grinder, you can make the tool you need. Be sure to wear your safety glasses.
