How to open ports?

Hi
I hope that someone can help me out. I've a router (Edimax 6104) and I've installed bittorrent and whem I try to dload I'm getting a small triangle at the bottom of the btorrent screen saying that the port is not open. can somebody guide me what to do in order to make it work?
