Here is a well-written treatment of the subject...I want to build a 15 Volt 9 Amp power supply using a center tap transformer , 2N3055, LM317.
The transformer output is 32 volt. I need the circuit diagram.

Alternately you can use the common/cheap 2N3055 power NPN, along with a small PNP, such as the 2N2907, in a Sziklai pair, which together act as a high-gain, power PNP (in the Wiki article schematic the polarities need to be reversed with Q1 the 2N2907 and Q2 the 2N3055, as discussed in paragraph 3).Or another variation on page 14. If you want to use the classic one-transistor current booster circuit with a 317, the power transistor needs to be PNP.
