I have set up a 36'catamaran with two 6hp 24v Torqeedo electric outboards. The factory says that these DC motors can run on five 6v batteries. I cannot find a 30v charger and have been told that a 32v or 36v would damage the batteries. I am using Trojan T45plus 160 amp batteries for maximum range. Can a higher voltage charger be modified to 30v, use a reostat or what?

Do you mean T145-Plus ?

And I don't think running 36V would hurt the batteries but it might be tough on the motors.

Why not run on 4 batteries and use a 24V charger?

Most chargers have higher than battery voltage, it is the current regulation that is important.
Find a battery charger that has regulated current or put in pairs across a 12v charger.
Max.
