for my hnc project i have to design a P and I temperature controller with a thermocouple as the sensor. i dont really have a clue where to start and no ideas of what components i need or how to wire them up

What's a HNC project?

 

HNC is some kind of UK qualification I think.

 

How did you find yourself in a class about components and theory that you "have no idea of what to do"?

How many weeks long is this class and does it have an instructor? That instructs? Does it have a book? Do you read? What makes you think having someone else do it will improve your situation? Won't you be just as clueless when the next problem comes along?

I don't understand your claimed "don't have a clue" declaration at all? What kind of class gives out assignments that the students wouldn't have a clue about how to accomplish them?

Surely you over estimate your lack of understanding of the subject or you have truly gotten yourself into a pickle. Tell us what do you know of electronics?
