Hi,

Does any one know what the parameters needed for winding a high q coil? Also the parameters for a high q copper tube?

Thanks

The thing to remember about inductors is that the inductance goes up as a square of the number of turns, while the resistance goes up as a direct proportion to the number of turns. So, whatever gives you the most inductance for a given length of wire will have the most Q.

For a SINGLE LAYER solenoid, the optimum Q gives you a coil Aspect Ratio (ratio of diameter to length, of about 1.15. There's a NAME for this coil which I've forgotten, but it's a very good indicator of the best coil you can make...at least with an air core. :)

If you search around for the Wheeler formula, you'll come across that aspect ratio. I don't recall it's name either. Maybe just "optimum solenoid" or such.
