Hi. I am replacing a circulating pump for my pool. The motor can be run using 115 or 230 volts. It is 1 1/2 HP I'm replacing a 1 HP motor.
I'm not sure if the old pump motor was run on 230 or 115. There was 3 wires going to it one wire was definetly a ground. the other 2 went to L1 and L2 terminals. The new pump has the same terminals but has a switch for 115 or 230
The breaker for the pump is a dual 30 amp breaker.
I have a volt meter. If it is 230 I believe I should have 115 volts on each wire using a meter with one wire connected to the ground?
Am I right?
The motor is a single phase motor.

Yes, but to assure that you have 230VAC, check for 230VAC.

Phase to phase. That is, check between the two power wires.

Edit,

The 30 amp breaker is over-sized for a 1.5HP on 230 volts. Ok for 120V with #10 wire.
Are you sure it's not a single pole GFI? They can sometimes look like a double

It's a double breaker with a cage. No button for a GFI. Does this help?
Do you mean check the voltage across the 2 power wires?
Should I have 115 across each leg?

From leg to leg. One probe on each leg will read ~230VAC.

I believe there must be a GFI someplace!

Remember 30A is too large for 1.5HP on 230V.

Thanks. The pump runs fine. Thanks.
I put a volt meter across the 2 legs and it was 240 volts. Set the dial to 230.
Buttoned it up then started it.
Thanks again
