I am looking for a cheap solution to provide 6 Volts AC with 500ma.
I have been advised that I can take a Wall Wart apart and remove the
rectifying parts and filters if any.

A 6 Volt DC Wall Warts transformer will most likely supply somewhere in the 10 to 12 Volt AC range which is well above my requirements, so with this in mind I should be looking for maybe a 5Volt DC Wall Wart or less?

I am hoping that someone might have had experience here.

I realize that purchasing a step down transformer might be the better solution but the small size of the Wall Wart just seems a better fit.

 

What not just go out any buy a 6V AC walwart. Save yourself the trouble and possibly your house burning down.

I have transformed a 5V adapter to 6V. Luckily they were using the TL431 standard circuit in the feedback circuit, just needed to change one resistor.

If you have an old 5V USB adapter lying around you can try this.

 

Only mod I've ever made to a wart... I lucked across one from a mutilated paper shredder that was 24 volt and several amps... I would have to look..
Anyway, I installed a switch in the case to select which the pin would be -- pos. or neg.
