Hallway Lighting

Hi Everyone. I'm a noob here, but am studying Electronics at the moment. I was thinking that to help myself out, I'd start on some small personal projects, putting things into practice.

I'm thinking of making a new LED ceiling light for my hallway, but I'm not sure exactly where to start.

I'm guessing I'm going to need to make a full-wave rectifier to allow the current to go from the mains, through the LED's, but I need some advice on what components I'll need to create this with the most convenient output.

I'm also after some advice on what sort of LED's I'll need to get some good light out.

Once I have this information, I can start working out resistor values and drawing the circuit up on Proteus. I think.

Or am I thinking in the wrong/un-logical way?

Anyway, any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
