h-bridge inverter project: efficiency

Hi,
I need some help on my h-bridge inverter design. In ALL textbooks and pdfs, the output filter (inductor+capacitor) is always connected. This means a relatively large current will be flowing in the capacitor even when the load is disconnected. This should decrease the overall efficiency of the device. Is this normal? How can this be prevented?

For example, in my project, I am using a boost converter stage before the inverter stage (using multi-level pwm). When the load is disconnected, I get an almost 50A current (with spikes) on the scope at the output of the boost. I am using SIMULINK.

Thanks
