guatemala vs mexico

So sorry again if this is deemed to political. I'm watching I almost got away with it on OWN and its about a guy whos running from mexico to guatamala. They pay a coyote to get them into guatamala and he said all the people coming from guatamala said why are you going south, its so much more dangerous then mexico. Knowing what I know about Mexico and crime thats a huge statement. I'd never heard of guatamala having this bad rep. I've had friends that did biz there and never had any issues. Has anyone been there or knowlegable about mexico in its current state? I looked at the numbers and Guatimala is like 400% more violent. Just curious if we have members there that can enlighten us as to why its so much more violent? Compared to Mexico, Columbia, and other S. American countries.
