Hi,

I have a question about FM and Bessel functions. Usually we use bessel functions of the first kind to show the magnitudes of the side bands.

My question is the implications of having a negative amplitude for the carrier frequency. The magnitude of my carrier is still relevant (around 0.3) but since its negative, do i still need to consider it against my other sidebands that have amplitudes that are positive?

I guess in short, my question is, when considering the sidebands, are we looking at the amplitude or the magnitude? i.e. is -0.3 more significant than 0.05?
