I have a IRF540 FET and i need it to be switched on and off with a 555. It will power something that needs more current then the 555 can out put so the Fet drain and source will be connected directly to the battery. But when i do this it does not work right. It looks like the 555 is powering the led and not the 555.
I tried various configurations of the pins but they all work the same way. Can you help?

I watched the video you provided and I observe what you are talking about.

I wonder if your FET has been damaged perhaps. ESD perhaps has done it in.
