Ethernet Link Status

Hi,

I have a simple question, but can’t find the answer with Google.
If I have an Ethernet connection between two the devices, the
device will give a LINK STATUS UP.

But what does that mean? Is the LINK UP because the Ethernet
PHY detects a carrier, so it is receiving something or is it also an
indication that what the PHY transmissions are received by the far end?

Thanx,
Bert

Solved, the link status is UP when there is communication in both directions, so receiving only a carrier is not enough. Is link status linked to the auto negotiation process? is the link up when the AN process is finished?
