Hi, I have been given a task to construct circuits and microcontroller to help reduce energy consumption in a building.Any idea/suggestions?What would make an excellent project?

You could first investigate on where most enery consumption is done.
You could take a look at the lighting, that can be made automatic when entering a room and leaving a room.
Also the heating system can be taken care of.

I always forget the water heater on. A microcontroller would make a swift job out of it.
