I have been searching ebay for electronic test equipment like oscilloscopes and signal generators. Can anyone suggest some alternatives like 2nd hand electronics sites based in the uk?

Display electronics (distel.co.uk)

You can also find some amateur stuff offered at Uk amateur forums like

http://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/index.php

Edit you can often find equipment at the Radio Amateur rallies and fairs. They cover much more than Am Radio these days.
Look for the RSGB calendar.

I'd expect they have the same thing in the UK but at work we routinely buy stuff from industrial auctions like dovebid, xline assets, the branford group,etc...
We get AMAZING deals all the time.. pennies on the dollar all the time..
Yes you have to wait for the auction to come up but its ALWAYS been cheaper than ebay,etc..

Personally I'd recommend you just go to a local university or hospital and see if they have any old ones they're getting rid of. My first scope I got for free from a hospital that was upgrading their EKG machines to use modern (digital) scope monitors.

Worth a shot, anyway!

Matt
