Please excuse my ignorance since I'm not an engineer, but isn't the engineering already performed by others when using a kit? My understanding of a senior project is that it be something YOU create in order to demonstrate what you have learned. On the other hand, I have known people to buy a kit simply because most of the parts they wanted to use in THEIR design were made readily available in a kit.
