i have a eg 1500 generator the is a light next to the volt meter should that light be on all the time or when it overloads

 

What is the label next to the light? Does it say "Voltage On", or "Overload"?

 

Do you have the EG1500 manual? The only light on the control panel is the pilot light. It should be on when the engine is running.
I found this manual by going to the Honda web site and following the links.

I don't see the reason for the light. Why do you need one to know that the generator is running?
Can you drive a load (e.g., space heater) with the generator?
If you really want that light to work, trace out the circuit with a multimeter and find out where the fault is.
Regarding your PM question, there is no resistor in the wiring diagram.
