I was working on building a power supply off a LM317 but I want to know if there was a more efficient way and still stay lineral ?????

Thanks

What's wrong with a switching supply? Some of the new chips make it very easy.

Almost any linear supply is going to be inefficient. It is their nature.

Oh ok and I realized that but was looking for a better way..
I have never played with smps before and not sure how it works or even where to begin on building one ..

For starters look at the 34063. It is an older chip. Not the best on the shelf but it is very versatile and you will find tons of circuits for it. Try to pick up one of those cheap cell phone chargers and tear it apart. Chances are it will have that chip.

Texas Instruments has a bunch of chips with a really nice design tool.
