difference between network layer and network service

    :) As it is known that ip is connectionless network service which belongs to n\w layer,and virtual circuit packet switching uses connection oriented n\w service ,then how data can be transferred via connection oriented ,since IP is connectionless . ( eg ATM networks).
    plz explain in detail.

    TCP/IP is a layer 3 protocol. This is transported on the link layer (ATM, PPP, etc) which is transported across the physical layer (phone line, DSL, etc).
