I imagine that would be one SERIOUS PIN diode!

It said there that diode is 1N4148 (a very small thing really)

In the OLD small NMR's a bundle of 2X4 parallel 1N4448 diodes are used.
The new ones use PIN diodes.

Was it for about 1kW pulses?

P.S. Raggio's spectrometer is for liquid state NMR and its rf pulses are not stronger than 50-60W so 2 1N4148 seems enough.

A 1N4448 can handle more than a 1N4148.
We have always used the 1N4448 for all NMR systems.
The capacity of the 1N4448 is also lower (so it switches faster).
